Hello
I have requested a vet and a nurse, via Worldwide Vet Service, for 11-18 Sept.
Celia has arranged accomodation.
We hope to make a start by sterilising perhaps 100 of the stray cats in the dock area.
It needs 5 or 6 visits over 2-3 years to get the cat problem under control.
It is impossible for Celia to have too much happening at the same time because she has only a few helpers.
If other people/Ôrganisations offer help, it would be very welcome.
WVS find volunteer vets and nurses, who pay their own fare, but Celia would need to provide drugs and materials for the operations.
For 100 cats it would cost €500+, so offers of finance for drug costs would be useful ( we also need a helpful vet to order drugs)
As far as the dog problem goes, thats a tough one!
It really does need people with experience of stray dog programmes to sort it out.
Some dogs will probably be suitable for neuter and return to the street, if they have a regular feeder.
It´s not as easy as doing cats, but it should be do-able.
Some dogs may be suitable for re-homing after sterilization.
Short-term foster homes would be necessary, whilst homes were arranged.
For this reason, it would be difficult to deal with a large number of dogs in a short space of time.
Inevitably, some serious health problems would be identified in some dogs and the question of euthanasia would come up in some cases.
But I know what Celia means - she doesnt want dogs killed simply because they live on the street.
I hope some offers of help come. The first question to be answered is estimated SIZE of problem!
We need a tail count!
I will continue with my contact with WVS and with Celia and I will hope for more offers of help.
Warm Regards,
Lesley
